Information for ENGR 328

WEB SITE328 Web site http://chem.engr.utc.edu/328

On that site is a link to "Class Syllabus"

E-MAIL & TRANSFERING FILES

You'll get e-mail via a "Generic-E-Mail" address that UTC has for you.

It looks like this: jim-henry@GEM.UTC.EDU

That address is really a pseudonym (fake name) for your REAL e-mail address.

You need to tell the UTC registration system what your REAL e-mail address is.

Change the e-mail address on file from the online registration system (http://www.utc.edu/online_reg/on_reg1.html). If you follow the links to Register or check status of Confirmation of Attendance, you will eventually come to a screen that says:

"SELF SERVICE REGISTRATION VERSION 1.3" and if you choose #1, you can change your e-mail address on file with the University.

Your professor will use "BlackBoard" for grades and receiving files from you and your Group.

There is a link to our BlackBoard site on the 328 web page.

See instructions at http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/BB4Students.html

You can use BlackBoard for sending files to a Group "File Exchange" for Groupmates or the professor to get.

Your professor wants you to send a file to your Group's "File Exchange' before next Tuesday.

TEAMS

We will work in Groups this semester. The Groups will be assigned on the first day of class. They will be changed once, after three weeks. If everybody in your Group requests, in writing, after three weeks, to leave your Group unchanged, that request will be granted.

EXAM 1

Approximately, Tuesday, Feb. 11

Team Assignments:Team roles rotate with each assignment. Johnson et al. (1991) suggest

(1) the coordinator (organizes assignment into subtasks, allocates responsibilities, keeps group on task),
(2) the checker (monitors both the solutions and every Group member's comprehension of them), and
(3) the recorder (checks for consensus, writes the final group solution).
Heller et al. (1992) propose
(4) the skeptic (plays devil's advocate, suggests alternative possibilities, keeps group from leaping to premature conclusions).

Only the names of the students who actually participated should appear on the final product, with their Group roles for that assignment identified.

  Minute Write:

End of each class, Two questions

(1) What is the most significant thing you learned today?
(2) What question is uppermost in your mind at the end of this class session?

  Special Services:

Your success in ENGR 328 is vital to me. If you have a disability which may require assistance or accommodations, or if you have questions related to any accommodations for testing, note takers, readers, etc..., please speak with me as soon as possible. You may also contact the Office of Student Affairs (755-4534) with questions about any such services.
If you have any special request of me to help you this semester, please ask me.

 Special Opportunity:

A small amount of money is available to sponsor something that will improve the learning in this class. If you have an idea for something that will do this, submit a letter that describes how you propose to accomplish this and your idea may be funded. Ordinarily the limit for an idea is $25. Submit your letter before theend of the third week of classes.

  Working & learning together:

I invite you to work together to help each other learn.
 Reminder for instructor:
"First, we now know a great more about learning and learning styles then we did many years ago. Students come into class with many innate learning styles and fewer imposed learning habits. It seems to me that one of our responsibilities is to expose both ourselves and the students to new, stretching and challenging experiences. Second, a demonstration of proficiency on a test is little more than a demonstration of test taking. It is a poor reflection of learning, education and retention." -- Louis Schmier
